IND highlights September as an important month for raising awareness about cultural heritage and brain health risks, from Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) to World Alzheimer’s Awareness Day (September 21).
We recognize the rich traditions and vibrant culture that define the Hispanic community. However, we also acknowledge that this population is disproportionately affected by Alzheimer's disease. It is estimated that Hispanic individuals are 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than other individuals and are often diagnosed at more advanced stages (Alzheimer’s Association).
Ensuring access to clear, culturally relevant educational resources is vital. Providing information targeting the Hispanic community can help close the knowledge gap and empowers families to take action. Below, you’ll find two videos presented in Spanish: the first one introducing Alzheimer’s disease, and the second one highlighting women’s elevated risk of developing the disease. This information is especially important for Hispanic women, who face two significant risk factors—sex and ethnicity—that together increase vulnerability to Alzheimer’s.
IND remains interested in engaging with the Hispanic community. We encourage you to reach out and let us know how we can be of help to you and your loved ones.
